To be eligible to obtain the American citizenship, you must demonstrate a basic knowledge of US history and system of government, including some information about the geography of the United States, and important dates. During the interview, the immigration official will test your ability to understand and speak English, asking you a maximum of 10 questions. See a video on how the interview is conducted.
You must be capable of correctly answering at least 6 Citizenship questions to pass the exam. You will be asked to read up to 3 simple sentences in English, and take a dictation of up to 3 sentences (see the written sentences for the naturalization interview). From the moment you arrive, the immigration officer will be evaluating your ability to understand and speak basic English. Practice dictation in English here.
There are several basic requirements to be eligible for the American citizenship. The USCIS provides a form M-477 as a check list to determine if you have everything you need for Naturalization. This is not to turn in to Immigration, but to for you to find out if you are eligible for citizenship, starting on being 18 or older and having the required minimum time of residence in the U.S. You can use this form as a guide if you are not sure you are eligible and ready to begin the process.
Once you have determined your eligibility, download the form N-400 Aplication for Naturalization directly from the official USCIS website. In the interview, you may be asked to read parts of your application form N-400, or they can ask you questions about the information you entered in the form: dates of arrivals or departures from the country, family members, dates of marriages or divorces, previous names, etc. To better prepare for this part of the interview, use our Audio CD Personal Questions of the Form N-400.
